Fascinating passage from Black Sun (Wolff) about Harry Crosby’s dislike of French and how the language compares to English from a writer’s perspective:

He began to develop a subtle prejudice against the French, born of his familiarity with Parisian society and culture. Harry was fluent in French, and could read it with ease and speed, but by 1929 he was writing of his ‘abhorrence’ of that tongue, and noting that he had given away almost all of his books in the language other than those by Perse and Rimbaud. The reasons are complex… Language, or more properly grammar, is the obstacle that blocks the path of anyone ambitious to fit within the skin of a cultivated Frenchman. English is a language in which literacy is achieved by the expression of a huge vocabulary, through the interstices of a loose and easy syntax. It is a language that prizes evolution and surprise, one that requires curiosity and diligence rather than the kind of compulsive analysis and repetition by rote that French children – to their later, greater glory – are obliged to suffer. In all languages the illiterate may be recognized by their ignorance of approved syntactical arrangements, but in English, once grammar has been absorbed, only vocabulary, and perhaps accent, distinguishes one speaker from his ‘inferior’…

But in the French language, grammar is a tyrant. It is monstrously difficult, and within its labyrinths are hidden all delicacy and sense, all meaning, all purpose, everything that Harry or any other writer would think of as literature.

This reminds me of how satisfying it can be to piece together a perfectly precise sentence in French.

This might be the most ridiculous/fabulous/silly video ever, and I have had this song stuck in my head for going on three months. This is the song, that when it comes on my iPod, keeps me running. How can you not love a song that actually includes the lyrics, “I’m in love with a robot”?

I also appreciate that the robot in the video actually does… the robot. And he’s really sparkly.

Also, I am happy to see Robyn again, since she reminds me of… 1997.

NYRR Race 7.18.09

I started running in May, around the same time as my friend Kate. To keep ourselves motivated, we signed up for the NYRR Race for Central Park on July 18th – a 4 mile run. Neither one of is particularly athletic, so this was a pretty big commitment. Fortunately, we’ve both stuck with our training, and have had a couple runs of 4-5 miles. Of course, my very athletic friend Kristi is now trying to convince me to run the Boston Half Marathon in October… we’ll have to see how this 4 mile race goes first!

I moved to Chelsea on July 1st, and I thought I would miss running at Pear Tree Point in Darien, but I’ve discovered that I only live a couple of blocks away from Hudson River Park. There is a perfect 4 mile loop if I run from 15th St. down to Battery Park City – and I have a fabulous breeze and view of the Statue of Liberty the whole time! I was worried about staying motivated, but now I look forward to my run every day. But I’m still going to wait on the Half Marathon.

I absolutely love this article. This past weekend, a the BC reunion, my friends and I were discussing how certain actors make a living by accruing a long list of credits on well-known shows without ever becoming a mainstream name. This concept was new to my friends, who don’t work in the industry. This article is the perfect example (except for the fact, of course, that this actor has now been profiled by the NYT!). I have always said that my dream acting job would be on a soap opera – the drama! You could die, come back to life, get married and have an affair – all in a week’s work! This guy’s career path is pretty fabulous as well – to play the guy who is always has a dramatic death on all the Law & Order-type shows? Amazing.
